Over the years Biolin has carried out many activities that have given it one of the deepest, broadest spectrum of flax and hemp straw, fiber and shive related knowledge bases in North America. Our experience includes setting up replicated plots to evaluate various physical performance attributes of both foreign fiber flax varieties as well as Canadian oilseed flax varieties, and then retting, extracting and evaluating fiber yields.
We've conducted extensive field testing of traditional European style "long line" fiber flax production, modified fiber flax production for "total flax fiber," and innovative methods to produce higher yields and better quality fiber from oilseed flax traditionally grown in Canada.
Biolin has developed specialized testing systems, including an organoleptic testing system for straw and fiber based on the European system with a numerical scoring system, and a Near InfraRed (NIR) system to quickly measure bast fiber content in flax straw samples.
As founding members of the American Society of Testing and Materials ASTM D13.17 (Bast Fibers and Plants), the North American Linen Association (NALA), and the Prairie Fibre Network, we maintain strong connections throughout the industry and have hosted international visitors from more than ten countries.
